about

Kyoko kicked off their short life with, from the listeners point of view, their most difficult record. Moody and experimental. But then they had just formed from the collapse of lo-fi noise-niks, Beatnik Filmstars, who imploded whilst on a very unhappy German tour. Naturally Kyoko was a deliberate move away from the pop-punk upbeat Beatniks sound. Keeping the Lo-Fi spirit, but playing it quiet and slow. Using loops and samples with minimal technology. 'One: Mini' was hard to 'get' unless you you're prepared to really listen and award it repeated spins. Despite glowing reviews in national music papers such as Melody Maker ; ('This record will make it worthwhile having your heart broken' 4/5), and the NME: ("Magic Hands could be an early SMOG cast off" 8/10) the record buying public decided it wasn't worth the trouble of bothering to listen and flocked to buy whatever shite was popular in 1999 instead. Their loss.
